The story of mankind

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. God created man in his own image. He created male and female, Adam and Eve. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because he rested on it from all the work of creating that he had done.

태초에 하나님께서 하늘과 땅을 창조하셨습니다. 하나님께서 하나님의 형상대로 사람을 창조하시되, 남자와 여자를 만드셨습니다. 그들의 이름이 아담과 이브입니다. 하나님께서 손수 만드신 모든 것을 보시니, 보시기에 매우 좋았습니다. 저녁이 지나고 아침이 되니, 이 날이 여섯째 날이었습니다. 하나님께서 일곱째 되는 날에 복을 주시고, 그 날을 거룩하게 하셨습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서 만드시던 모든 일을 마치시고 그 날에 쉬셨기 때문입니다.

 

The LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. The LORD God brought all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air to the man to see what he would name them. It was the first mission that God gave to the man. Whatever the man called each living creature, which was its name since then.

여호와 하나님께서 동쪽 땅 에덴에 동산을 만드시고, 지으신 사람을 그 곳에서 지내게 하셨습니다. 여호와 하나님께서 흙으로 지으신 들의 모든 짐승과 공중의 모든 새를 아담에게 이끌고 가셔서, 아담이 그것들의 이름을 어떻게 짓는지를 보셨습니다. 이것이 하나님께서 인간에게 주신 첫 번째 임무였습니다. 아담이 모든 생물의 이름을 지어 부르면, 그것이 곧 그것들의 이름이 되었습니다.

 

God so loved the man and the woman that he let them rule over all the creatures that move along the ground. God gave everything they need. However God said, “You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” It was the first promise that God and man made. However, the man and the woman broke the promise with God. God drove the man out and said, “You will eat of it all the days of your life through painful toil.”

하나님께서 인간을 사랑하셔서, 땅 위에 기어 다니는 모든 생물을 다스리게 하셨습니다. 하나님께서는 그들이 필요한 모든 것을 주셨습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 “선악을 알게 하는 나무의 열매만은 먹지 마라. 만약 그 나무의 열매를 먹으면, 너는 반드시 죽을 것이다.”라고 말씀하셨습니다.“ 이것이 하나님과 인간이 맺은 첫 번째 약속입니다. 하지만 남자와 여자는 그 약속을 깨뜨리고 말았습니다. 하나님께서는 그들을 에덴에서 내쫓으시면서 말씀하셨습니다. “너는 평생토록 수고하여야 땅에서 나는 것을 먹을 수 있게 될 것이다.”

 

The Man and the woman driven out of Eden by God multiplied greatly and became a big family. They wanted to build a city with tower called Babel to make a name for them. The LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. The LORD said, "If they have begun to do this because they are one people and they speak the same language, then nothing (that) they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” The LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth from there.

에덴에서 쫓겨난 사람들이 번성하여 대가족이 되었습니다. 그들은 자신들의 이름을 알리기 위해 바벨탑이 있는 도시를 짓기로 하였습니다. 여호와께서 사람들이 쌓고 있는 성과 탑을 보려고 내려오셨습니다. 여호와께서 말씀하셨습니다. “이 사람들은 한 백성이고, 그들의 언어도 다 똑같다. 그래서 이런 일을 시작하였는데, 이 일은 그들이 하려고 하는 일의 시작에 불과하다. 그들은 하려고만 하면 어떤 일이든지 할 수 있을 것이다. 그러니 내려가서 그들의 언어를 뒤섞어 놓자. 그리하여 그들이 자기들끼리 하는 말을 전혀 알아듣지 못하게 하자.” 그리고 거기에 있던 모든 사람들을 온 땅 위에 흩어 놓으셨습니다.

 

The story of Abraham’s family

However God decided to have God’s people against others and chose Abram for his purpose. The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.”

하지만 하나님께서 그들 중에 자신의 백성을 만드시기로 결심하고 아브라함을 택하셨습니다. 여호와께서 아브람(아브라함이라 부르기 전의 이름)에게 말씀하셨습니다. “네 나라와 네 친척과 네 아비의 집을 떠나 내가 너에게 보여 줄 땅으로 가거라. 내가 너를 큰 나라로 만들어 주고, 너에게 복을 주어, 너의 이름을 빛나게 할 것이다. 너는 다른 사람들에게 복이 될 것이다.”

 

Descendants came as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore so from this one man, as God made the promise to Abraham. Abraham became the father of Ishmael and Isaac. Isaac also had two sons; Jacob and Esau. Jacob became the father of 12 sons who were the twelve tribes of Israel. The 11th son Joseph became the prime minister of Egypt later and Jacob’s family moved to Egypt. They all had stayed in Egypt for 400 years since then.

하나님께서 아브라함에게 약속하신 대로 아브라함 한 사람으로부터 하늘의 허다한 별과 또 해변의 무수한 모래와 같이 많은 후손이 나왔습니다. 아브라함은 이스마엘과 이삭이란 아들을 두었습니다. 이삭은 야곱과 에서라는 아들을 낳았으며, 야곱은 이스라엘의 12지파가 되는 12아들을 두었습니다. 그의 11번째 아들이 나중에 이집트의 재상이 되었고 야곱의 가족은 이집트로 내려가게 됩니다. 그들은 그 이집트에서 400년을 보냅니다.

 

The history of Israel

When a new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power in Egypt, the people of Israel became slaves. So the whole Israelite community set out from the Egypt, traveling from place to place as the LORD commanded. After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua, "Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them--to the Israelites.”                                      

요셉이 누구인지 모르는 새로운 사람이 왕이 되자 이스라엘 민족은 노예가 되었습니다. 그래서 이스라엘 모든 무리가 이집트를 떠나 여호와께서 명령하신 대로 이곳 저곳으로 옮겨 다녔습니다. 모세가 죽은 후, 하나님께서는 여호수아에게 말씀하셨습니다. “내 종 모세는 죽었다. 이제 너는 모든 백성을 이끌고 요단 강을 건너가 내가 너희 이스라엘 자손에게 주는 땅으로 가거라.

 

Joshua and his people entered the Promised Land. In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit. The elders of Israel wanted to make David their king. David had a son named Solomon who was called the king of wisdom. God replied to his pray and said, “I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.”

여호수아와 그의 백성들은 약속의 땅을 들어갔습니다. 그 때에 이스라엘 사람들에게는 왕이 없었습니다. 그래서 사람들마다 자기가 하고 싶은 대로 했습니다. 이스라엘의 장로들은 다윗을 그들의 왕으로 세우기를 원했습니다. 다윗 왕에게는 지혜의 왕이라 불리는 솔로몬이라는 아들이 있었습니다. 하나님은 솔로몬의 기대에 응답하여 “나는 네가 원하는 것을 주겠다. 나는 너에게 지혜와 슬기를 주겠다. 너처럼 지혜로운 사람은 전에도 없었고, 앞으로도 없을 것이다.”라고 말씀하셨습니다.

 

The Kingdom of Israel was divided apart into two kingdoms, The South Judah and the North Israel. When the North Kingdom Israel was attacked by Assyria, Hezekiah king of Judah sent this message to the king of Assyria: "I have done wrong. Withdraw from me, and I will pay whatever you demand of me." The king of Assyria exacted from Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. The South Kingdom Judah had survived for another 140 years since then.

이스라엘 왕국은 남쪽의 유다와 북쪽의 이스라엘 두 개의 왕국으로 나뉘어 졌습니다. 북쪽의 이스라엘 왕국이 아시리아의 침공을 받았을 때 유다 왕 히스기야가 앗수르 왕에게 사신을 보내어 말했습니다. “내가 잘못했습니다. 이 곳에서 떠나 주십시오. 그러면 요구하시는 대로 다 드리겠습니다.” 그러자 앗수르 왕이 히스기야에게 은 삼백 달란트 가량과 금 삼십 달란트 가량을 요구했습니다. 남쪽의 유다 왕국은 이 후 140년을 더 살아남았습니다.

 

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your forefathers when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. I said, ‘Every seventh year each of you must free any fellow Hebrew who has sold himself to you. After he has served you six years, you must let him go free.' Your fathers, however, did not listen to me or pay attention to me. After he has served you six years, you must let him go free.' Your fathers, however, did not listen to me or pay attention to me. Jeremiah had said, "All your wives and children will be brought out to the Babylonians. You yourself will not escape from their hands but will be captured by the king of Babylon; and this city will be burned down." His prophecy was fulfilled.

그 때에 여호와께서 예레미야에게 말씀하셨습니다. “이스라엘의 하나님 나 여호와가 말한다. 내가 너희 조상을 종살이하던 이집트 땅에서 인도해 낼 때 그들과 언약을 맺었다. 그들에게 ‘칠 년째 되는 해마다 너희 각 사람은 너희 히브리 종을 풀어 주어야 한다. 너희에게 팔려와 육 년 동안 일한 종이 있거든 그를 자유롭게 풀어 주어야 한다’고 말했다. 그러나 너희 조상은 내 말을 듣지도 않았고 귀를 기울이지도 않았다. 예레미야는 다음과 같이 예언하였습니다. “왕의 모든 아내들과 자녀들도 바빌로니아 군대에게 끌려갈 것이고 왕도 그들의 손아귀에서 벗어나지 못할 것입니다. 왕은 바빌로니아 왕에게 붙잡힐 것이고 예루살렘은 불타 버릴 것입니다.” 그의 예언대로 이루어졌습니다.

 

Cyrus king of Persia that had overtaken Babylon sent Nehemiah to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem. Although the wall was rebuilt and completed, the people Israel had to spend another 400 years under the rules of Greece, Egypt and finally Rome.

바빌론을 멸망시킨 페르시아 왕국의 왕 고레스가 느헤미야를 보내 예루살렘의 성벽을 다시 건축하도록 했습니다. 성벽은 다시 완성되었지만, 이스라엘 백성은 그리스, 이집트 그리고 로마의 지배 아래 400년을 보내야 했습니다. 

 

The story of Jesus Christ

Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea during the time of King Herod. Jesus said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in the darkness.”

예수님께서는 헤롯이 왕으로 있던 시대에 유대의 베들레헴이라는 마을에서 태어나셨습니다. “인자는 섬김을 받으러 온 것이 아니라 섬기러 왔고, 자기 목숨을 많은 사람들을 위하여 주려고 왔다. 나는 세상에 빛으로 왔다. 나를 믿는 사람은 누구든지 어둠 속에 머물지 않을 것이다.”고 말씀하셨습니다.  

 

When Jesus was twelve years old, his family went up to the Feast in Jerusalem, After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

예수님이 열두 살이 되었을 때에도 유월절 관습을 따라 예루살렘으로 올라갔습니다. 유월절이 끝나고 집으로 돌아오는데 소년 예수님은 예루살렘에 남아 있었습니다. 하지만 부모들은 이 사실을 몰랐습니다. 삼 일 뒤에 그들은 성전에서 예수님을 발견하였습니다. 예수님은 성전에서 율법학자들 사이에 앉아서 듣기도 하고, 묻기도 하면서 계셨습니다.

 

Before Jesus started to teach people, he was led by the Sprit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

예수님이 사람들을 가르치기 전에, 예수님께서는 성령에게 이끌려 광야로 가셔서, 마귀에게 시험을 받으셨습니다. 시험하는 자가 예수님께 와서 이렇게 말했습니다. “만일 당신이 하나님의 아들이라면, 이 돌에게 빵이 되라고 명령해 보시오.” 예수님께서 대답하셨습니다. “성경에 ‘사람이 빵으로만 살 것이 아니라, 하나님의 입에서 나오는 모든 말씀으로 살 것이다’ 라고 기록되어 있다.”

 

Jesus must have performed many miraculous signs but twenty nine of them are written in the Bible. Jesus performed the first of his miraculous signs by his mother’s request. Jesus’ mother said to him, "They have no more wine." Jesus replied, “Dear woman, why do you involve me?" and said, "My time has not yet come." Anyway He made water turn into wine for the wedding banquet. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him. 예수님께서는 많은 표적을 행하셨지만, 성경에 기록된 것은 29번 밖에 없습니다. 예수님의 첫 번째 표적은 그의 어머니 부탁 때문에 이루어 졌습니다. 예수님의 어머니가 예수님께 “이 집의 포도주가 다 떨어졌구나”라고 말해 주었습니다. 예수님께서는 “어머니, 왜 저에게 이런 부탁을 하십니까? 저의 때가 아직 오지 않았습니다”라고 대답하셨습니다. 하지만 결혼 잔치를 위해 물을 포도주로 만들었으며 거기서 그의 영광을 보여 주셨습니다. 그러자 그의 제자들이 그를 믿게 되었습니다.

 

Now Jesus became famous. There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him." Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. This was the first lecture recorded in the bible.

이제 예수님은 유명해졌습니다. 바리새인들 중에 니고데모라는 사람이 있었습니다. 그는 유대 공의회 의원 중 한 사람이었습니다. 어느 날 밤, 니고데모가 예수님을 찾아왔습니다. 그는 “선생님, 우리는 당신이 하나님께로부터 오신 선생님이라는 것을 압니다. 하나님께서 함께하시지 않는다면, 아무도 선생님께서 하셨던 일들을 행할 수 없습니다”라고 말했습니다. 예수님께서 대답하셨습니다. “내가 너에게 진리를 말한다. 누구든지 물과 성령으로 태어나지 않는다면, 그 사람은 하나님 나라에 들어갈 수 없다.”

 

Many people wanted to become his students but Jesus said, “Any of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciple.” Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. “Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

많은 사람들이 예수님의 제자가 되기를 원했지만 “너희 가운데 누구든지 가지고 있는 모든 것을 버리지 않으면, 내 제자가 될 수 없다.”고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님께서 언제나 기도하고 희망을 잃지 말아야 할 것을 가르치시기 위해 제자들에게 비유를 말씀하셨습니다. 부자가 하나님 나라에 들어가는 것보다, 낙타가 바늘 구멍으로 지나가는 것이 더 쉽다.”

 

Jesus gave many lectures since then. The first public lecture of Jesus was called the Sermon on the Mount. There he taught a lot of things and finally he said, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

예수님께서는 그 후 많은 설교를 하셨습니다. 예수님이 행한 첫 번째 대중 설교를 산상설교라고 합니다. 그곳에서 많은 것을 가르치신 후 마지막으로 “내 말을 듣고, 그대로 행하는 사람은 바위 위에 집을 지은 지혜로운 사람과 같다.”고 말씀하셨습니다.

 

One day Jesus he was teaching a large crowd. When it became late in the day and they have only five loaves of bread and two fish, Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to set before the people. 어느 날 예수님이 수많은 군중들을 가리키고 있었습니다. 날이 저물고 그들이 가진 것은 빵 다섯 개와 생선 두 마리 밖에 없을 때, 예수님께서 사람들에게 무리를 지어서 풀밭에 앉으라고 하셨습니다. 예수님께서 빵 다섯 개와 생선 두 마리를 드시고, 하늘을 우러러보시며 감사 기도를 드리셨습니다. 그리고 제자들에게 빵을 떼어서 나누어 주도록 했습니다.

 

Jesus taught people for three years. When his mission was about to end, he and his disciples went to Jerusalem. As they approached Jerusalem and Jesus sent two disciples saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.” Jesus sat on them and entered Jerusalem. 예수님께서는 3년 동안 사람을 가르치셨습니다. 그의 임무가 끝나갈 무렵 예수님과 제자들은 예루살렘으로 향하였습니다. 예루살렘에 가까이 이르시자, 두 제자를 보내면서 “너희는 맞은편 마을로 들어가거라. 그러면 당나귀 한 마리가 새끼와 함께 묶여 있는 것을 발견할 것이다. 그 당나귀를 풀어서 나에게 가져오너라.”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님께서 그들을 타고 예루살렘으로 들어 가셨습니다.

 

At night before Jesus died, they had the last supper. After he taught the disciples many things at the table, he finally said, “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.”  예수님이 돌아가시기 바로 전날 그들은 마지막 만찬을 하였습니다. 식탁에 앉아 많은 가르침을 주신 후 예수님은 마지막으로 말씀했습니다. “내게는 아직 너희에게 할 말이 많이 있지만, 지금은 너희가 그 말을 도저히 이해할 수 없다.”

 

The next day came and Jesus died upon the cross. Anyone will very rarely die for a righteous man, though someone might possibly dare to die for a good man. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

다음날이 오자 예수님은 십자가에 못박혀 돌아가셨습니다. 의인을 위해 죽는 사람은 거의 없습니다. 간혹 선한 사람을 위해 죽겠다고 나서는 사람이 있을는지는 모르겠습니다. 그런데 그리스도께서는 우리가 아직 죄인이었을 때에 우리를 위해 죽으셨습니다. 이것으로써 하나님께서는 우리를 향한 그분의 사랑을 나타내셨습니다.

 

When the day of Pentecost came, the disciples were all together in one place.  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. The disciples had started to preach the teachings of Jesus since then.

오순절이 되어 제자들이 한 곳에 모두 모였습니다. 사람들은 다 성령으로 충만해졌습니다. 그리고는 성령께서 말하게 하시는 대로 자기들의 언어와 다른 외국어로 말하기 시작했습니다. 그 이후로 제자들이 예수님의 가르침을 설교하기 시작했습니다.

 

Jesus opposed the proud and said, “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Jesus also said, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." He taught us not to worry but to pray, as Daniel got down on his knees and prayed three times a day, giving thanks to his God.

예수님은 교만한 자를 반대하시며 “누구든지 자신을 높이는 사람은 낮아질 것이고, 낮추는 사람은 높아질 것이다.”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 “너희에게 겨자씨 한 알만한 믿음이 있으면, 이 산을 향하여 ‘여기서 저기로 움직여라’ 말할 것이다. 그러면 산이 움직일 것이다. 너희가 못할 일이 아무것도 없을 것이다.”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 다니엘이 하루에 세 번씩 무릎을 꿇고 하나님에게 기도하며 감사를 드렸던 것처럼, 염려하지 말고 기도하라고 가르쳤습니다.

 

Jesus said, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” Jesus finally said to us, "Go into the entire world and preach the good news to all creation. 예수님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 너희에게 새 계명을 주겠다. 서로 사랑하여라. 내가 너희를 사랑한 것같이 너희도 서로 사랑하여라.” 그리고 마지막으로 예수님께서 우리들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “세상으로 가라 그리고 온 세상에 복음을 전하여라.”
